Legacy means different things to different people. Some think of leaving behind money, assets, or a business to their children or grandchildren. Others see it as something more intangible — their effect on others and how they’ll be remembered via the way they lived their life.
The common thread seems to be the idea of leaving a lasting impact. Physical or intangible. Direct or indirect.
So what does it mean to “log” a legacy?
First, some transparency. Log Your Legacy was not the first choice when I started exploring the idea of helping people preserve their life stories and family history. It was one of many options that were whittled away as other business names, website domains, and social media handles were already taken.
Once I settled on it, I had this feeling that it was the absolute right choice.
To me, “logging your legacy” means documenting things that are important to you to help them live on after you’re gone.
It brings to mind the phrase “lengthening your shadow” — an idea in James R. Hagerty’s book, Yours Truly: An Obituary Writer’s Guide to Telling Your Story.
I love that there is not one way to preserve or document your stories in a lasting way.
Logging your legacy could mean:
- Freehand writing memories and insights and compiling them in a journal, folder, or binder
- Printing life stories and accompanying pictures in a keepsake book
- Writing and publishing a traditional autobiography or memoir
- Recording audio or video of you recounting life stories or family history
- Creating a video with your voice and related visuals
No matter the medium, I believe there is great value in taking time to reflect, preserve, and share what matters to us. (The basis for what became the Log Your Legacy Blueprint.)
Not only is it a means to have meaningful parts of us live on after we’re gone, but to help us live better today — with more peace, clarity, and connection. ♡
How will you log your legacy?
I hope this gets you thinking about how you may want to document your stories and insights in a lasting way.
